Directed writing (Report on School Problems)

Address of the writer

Subject: Reporting about the school's problems and providing suggestions

To the Principal of X school,
The school is currently facing many issues which, if not resolved, will have an adverse effect on the popularity and rapport of our school. The paints on the school premises are worsening day by day. The number of sports facilities is quiet low and those that are available are being maintained poorly. The laboratory has not been renewed after it caught fire a couple of months ago due to the lab accident. The wash-rooms and water closets are also dirty with strange drawings all over their walls and some do not even have sufficient water supply.
New sports facilities should be provided. The ground in the west corner of the school is currently of no use and wild grass has grown there. It should be mowed so it can be changed into a football pitch. After renewing the lab, new microscopes, chemicals and other latest equipment should be brought so that the students can stay up-to-date. Some class rooms are being used fro nothing. New subjects should be offered so that we can maximise use of the spare capacity. After the premises have been repainted, new windows should be fitted as most are damaged. These would increase the visual appeal as well.
These may look very expensive in the beginning but in later times, it would increase our student strength and would enhance our school's image. The students will have more curricular and extra-curricular activities to take part in. However if these problems are not overcome with firm resistance, they would undermine not only our number of students but also our reputation as a school. I hope that my report is good enough to convince you to take immediate action against these severe issues.

Passion of Gardening

Alastair Cook was a renowned and a successful school owner who had contributed towards educating thousands of students who achieved outstanding grades in their studies. He was sixty-five. It had been twenty-seven years since he had opened this school. After so many years he sat down with a sigh amd tried to recollect his memories about what inspired him to develop a passion of gardening, not for fruits or flowers, but for a class of elite students who would develop his country.
It all started when Alastair was a young kid. Back then, a gardener used to work in the back yard of his house growing and tending to all the plants. The gardener used to water the plants, spray insecticides and pesticides etc. This idea motivated him to study and work hard to open a school. After facing many troubles, he finally gathered enough funds to open a school.
First of all, he selected a three storey building with a massive playground. This was like ploughing the land before sowing the seeds. After the process of ploughing came the process of seeding. The seeds of his garden were children who were admitted to the school after passing an admission test. The test was intentionally difficult so as to allow only the best students to enter the school. The students who passed the test could be compared to the HYV(High Yielding Variety) of seeds which are more likely to produce better results.
Succeeding these came the steps fertilizing and watering the seeds. These were done by selecting the best books for the students and selecting the best teachers who would shower them with knowledge. Co and extra-curricular activities like debates and soccer matches enhanced their mental and physical strengths.
Lastly came the process of imposing rules and regulations and mantaining discipline which are very necessary. He gave harsh punishments to the students who misbehaved. Bad conduct and lack of discipline are like insects and pests which can ruin the whole plantation. To counter these rules, restrictions and punishments acted like insecticides and pesticides.
These measures, which were influenced by gardening helped to produce the fruits and flowers of his garden. Students who graduated from his school got jobs at notable ranks who together catapulted the society towards success and boosted his country's economy and reputation. Tears of joy filled Alastair's eyes as he closed them forever knowing that he had done a great job to serve his country

How important is it that people should marry and remain together permanently?

In my opinion, it is very important for people to get married and remain living together permanenetly. There are a number of reasons to support this view and opinion. Firstly, nobody is perfect so we should not expect that the person we are getting married to would be an angel and will live peacefully and do nothing wrong. "We are built to make mistakes, coded for error." as a famous person says so we should develop a habit of forgiving others for the sake of a healthy relationship.
Secondly, knowing each other takes time. Even in a love marriage, two different people require time to adjust with each other and become familiar with each others' lifestyle. We should not make abrupt decisions like divorce right after marriage as this will crumble our image in the society. All of us should try to amend our own mistakes and give time to others to amend theirs.
Permanent relationship means happiness forever, not only for ourselves but our off springs likewise. If we keep on quarralling with each other on petty issues, this would have a bad impact on our children's brains. The kids should not be deprived of the love of their parents and divorce means that they are deprived of their right. The number of single parent families in America has risen at a very steady rate thanks to unhealthy relationships. The kids require both, the strictness of their father and the politeness of their mother to become successful in life. They would be adversely affected if their parents kept on having quarrels or have divorced each other and are likely to do the same later on in the future. However if they grow in a peaceful and ideal environment, they would also do the same when they get into a relationship.
Good relationship between husband and wife would set a great example not only for their children but for the society as a whole. Most, if not all, other couples would also be impressed and will try to do the same at their homes as well. These will impact the overall society in a great way. Hence proved that it is very important for people to marry and remain living together permanently.

Write a story based on the following: “The owner of a local business takes strong action when threatened by outside competition.”

Mr. Johnson, the owner of the only general store in our neighborhood, was a very rude and mean person. He used to charge very high prices because of his monopoly. Despite his goods being very expensive and of very low quality, the residents of our area, including me, bought from his store as we had no other alternatives. Many a times the items I bought from his store were expired but I had to go on buying from his store.
After many years of misery, a handful of the residents opened a consumer co-operative with much effort and investment. They offered discounts along with good quality products. The staff employed in their general store was also nice, polite and soft-spoken.
The immediate impact on Mr. Johnson’s business was that his sales fell rapidly and he started incurring losses. To cope up with the new threat, he started advertising extensively. He also brought in new merchandise and diversified his product range but even then his market share kept on declining at a great pace. Mr. Johnson was much aggrieved at this and started planning other ways to gain back his lost market share and customers likewise.
Another strategy he used was to sell his goods at extremely lower prices, even lower than his rivals, but for no avail and his rivals kept on gaining more ground. The result of this pricing strategy was even more losses to Mr. Johnson who had no other choice than to sell off his assets and close down the business as he was unable to fend off competition due to his bad behavior and indifference to others’ problems.
Mr. Johnson tried another tactic for the last time. He accosted the members of the consumer co-operative and plead to them about his problems. He told them that he had no alternative bread and butter as nobody would employ him due to his selfish behavior. If the consumer co-operative continues, he will have to move away. The members of the co-operative felt piety for him and told him that they would stop if he discards his previous attitude. Mr. Johnson promised that he would do as they said. Seeing this, the members of the co-operative closed down their store.
Mr. Johnson was back in business but he did not continue his acts but started off in a new manner with the main aim of public welfare with a reasonable profit. Ten years have passed by but Mr. Johnson has abided by his promise and his business is currently a very prosperous one. This is how he was able to fend off competition with much effort.

Describe a time when efforts to please someone ended in failure.

It was my birthday so I invited all my schoolmates to the party at my home. All the guests had arrived by the designated time except for Ali. Ali was my best friend and his not coming would have displeased me. While we were waiting for him, my friends decided to pull a prank at him. At first I tried to stop them but they convinced me that it would be fun and Ali would not mind. They filled a bucket with water and placed it on the door so that when it opened, the bucket fell down. At last, we heard the sound of Ali’s and as he opened the door, the bucket fell and the water spilt on Ali covering him from head to toe. At this sight, everybody started laughing and Ali became embarrassed so he immediately called back his driver and went to his home.
At first, I thought that the matter was not serious and decided to apologize for the happenings of the eve the next day at school. On the next day, I accosted Ali as soon as I saw him and apologized but he gave me an angry look and averted his face. I then knew that he was really upset because of the day before. All day long, I tried to speak to him but he ignored me. When I reached my home, I immediately turned on my laptop and emailed Ali begging his pardon.
The day after that at school when the English teacher asked about the homework that had to be emailed to her, everyone replied that they have emailed except for Ali who told the teacher that his computer has broken down because of an email sent by me containing a virus. The teacher punished him with double homework for giving, what she thought was, a lame excuse for not doing work. After that while in a class, I sent him a text message saying sorry. Ill-fatedly, Ali’s cell was on general profile and rang out loud when the message was received. The teacher immediately confiscated his cell for a week. By the looks of his face, I could tell that he was extremely angry from me. In the break time, I wrote sorry on a piece of paper and kept it in one of Ali’s notebooks and put that notebook back in his bag. After the break, we had a math quiz and as Ali took out his notebook, the paper I had kept in it fell on the floor. The teacher thinking that Ali was cheating first scolded on him and then gave him a two hour after school detention.
After failing four times, I tried to give it a one more go. I bought an expensive watch and wrapped it in a colorful sheet. Along with it, I set towards Ali’s home. On arriving, I rang the door bell. Ali opened the door. Without a word, I presented the gift to him. He took it and threw it on the floor and shouted out aloud, “I hate you! Never speak to me ever again!” and with this he closed the door. Thus all my efforts ended in a fiasco.

What do you think people of your age can do to improve life in our country?

Teenagers, like me, can greatly influence the whole environment and community of our country, provided that we take the initiative and responsibility, life in our country can be greatly improved by doing some very simple tasks on our own at individual level. Below are some of the tasks that, if people of my age complete, will definitely boost up the process of improving life in the country.
Firstly, we have to take out the thought from our minds that rules are for losers. Rules are created for our own good and welfare and by not following them, we are ruining our society. For example, nowadays it is very common to see young teens riding bikes on the street without a license. By not following the rules, they are putting their lives as well as the lives of other people around them in great danger as they could crash into something or someone. No rule breaking can be considered as the first step towards a healthier and safer society.
Secondly, we could reduce our own expenses and give a part, whether it is a mere part, to the local charities or other social welfare organizations. This way the poor people of our nation could be given shelter, food and clothes to wear easily as there are many young people spending their allowances at places they shouldn’t like buying that extra packet of chips even though your tummy is full.
Thirdly, we could teach those children for free whose parents cannot afford to have their children taught at schools or other educational institutions. By following the policy of “Each one, teach one”, the learned teens can contribute greatly towards a bright future of our country as in later times these educated children will support and develop our nation greatly.
People of our ages could also do other social welfare activities like planting new plants and trees to reduce the pollution and make a clean environment to live in. Trash lifting in groups or individually or not littering the streets are other effective ways to improve the environment of our country. Smoking at such a small age and in public areas is also rule breaking so we should avoid these and many other non social acts if we hope to see a better country. By following the above mentioned as well as other thousands and millions of socially and environmentally friendly activities, we can ensure that the living conditions in our country are likely to be improved effectively and efficiently.
